Don't leave things to the last minute

Moving to a new place can be an adventure or a nightmare. It depends on your preparation and planning. If you wait until the last minute to prepare everything, spur of the moment decisions can almost guarantee a disaster. Try some of the following suggestions.

- Plan your move well in advance and give yourself breathing space.
- If possible, get you company to pay for it. Company sponsored relocation services are fairly common these days. Check to see if you or your partner might have access to such a service.
- Contact the Chamber of Commerce and get some information about the place you are moving too (especially valuable if it’s a new location). They can also let you know when to put out your trash, etc.
- Try and make a few contacts when you arrive at your destination. Find a good doctor, and make as many friends as you can at your new job. Having a support network around you can make settling into a new place a lot easier.
- If possible, plan a visit to your new home before you move in. Introduce yourself to the neighbors. This will often make moving to a new neighborhood a little less intimidating… unless of course your new neighbors are gun toting maniacs….: )
- Before you move, have you utilities turned on one day before you move in. Big companies can be slow to react and having a day’s breathing space will ensure that most of your utilities are up and running by the time you get there.
- Start packing early… if you do it bit by bit, you’ll make life much easier when the actual moving day comes.
- Pack in stages.
– Start early with items you rarely use.

Above all, take you time, prepare, make a good moving home checklist and prepare whatever you can in advance. Remember, it’s just a move and like everything else in life, it’ll pass and you’ll barely be able to remember it.
