Moving a Pool table or Piano

You don’t want to mess around with moving large items. Leave it for the professionals. However, if you are intent on moving large items or just want some advice for moving things like fridges then read on…

Most items like televisions or sewing machines, if lifted properly, you won’t have a problem with. However if you plan on moving a pool table, or large items like a fridge then you need exercise some caution. In most cases you should always make sure that you have 2 people to help you lift largish items… as mentioned before. Lift with you legs by bending you knees and not your back. Contrary to popular belief… spinal injuries aren’t fun.

Evaluate your moving options objectively. It’s best to make decisions about how you are going to move large objects before moving. People don’t always have the clearest of heads after spending the best part of the day moving things. You may also need to work out what things may not fit into your new living quarters. If you need to, storage is an option if you can’t fit it into your new apartment.

If you are going to try and move that couch that you somehow managed to get through the window on the 4th balcony 20 years ago then here are a few tips for moving bulky items.

Rule Number 1
If in doubt, dismantle the object. If you can’t dismantle it, cut it up with a chainsaw. But seriously, you’re not going to have much luck dismantling a refrigerator, but most of the time there’s a way to remove the legs from oversized couches.

Rule Number 2

Reassess your holes – most of the time if you are dismantling something, it’s because it wont’ fit through a doorway or window. Before you start dismantling, maybe all you have to do is plan a new route, or find out a way to open part of the window that you can’t normally open.

Rule Number 3
If the item you are moving is big and slippery (think large washing machines and fridges) and it doesn’t have any handles then you may have to make your own handholds. Try wrapping a rope around something and then holding the rope. If you can’t do this, try using a moving trolley.
