You can help to “De-Stress” you moving to house day if you follow the advice on this site and these tips for packing up your home. The following pearls of wisdom will make your moving house chore easier on both ends.
It may sound stupid (especially if you’ve moved house before). But boxes are a must. I’ve actually seen someone try and move without boxes and it was the funniest thing that I have ever seen. For more information on moving boxes click here. Make sure you have more then enough moving boxes. Try any of the links below for moving boxes. It is far better to have a few half empty boxes then to over pack the ones that you do have.
Pack the small things first. Get all of your glassware and small items out of the way – this will help make your life easier in the long run. You can use newspaper or bubble wrap for each item. If you do wrap your cutlery and glassware in newspaper, it’s a good idea to give them a wash when you’re un-wrapping them.
Don’t over pack your boxes – one of the stupidest things you can do… most moving house accidents (whether it’s from breakages or spinal injuries) occur because of over weight moving boxes. It might seem like a good idea to put all your books in one box… trust me, it’s not!
Label each box – some information you may want to include is the room it came from and if it’s from the kitchen, maybe the section of the kitchen. Accordingly, don’t carry a box from room to room packing it… stay in one place and fill up your box with things that are normally close to one and other.
If you are doing a long distance move you may want to pack a separate ‘overnight’ box which might contain enough things for you to survive on once you to get to your new house. I’d only bother doing this if you are really trying to save money. Some take away and few beers is a much more appealing idea then cooking your own dinner after moving all day. It is handy to have a few useful things in one location though…. For instance, a can opener and pan to cook in will never go astray. Anything else you might want, for example a small stereo (so you have some music to unpack to) should go in this box as well.
